How to revise with flashcards (and remember what you learn)

Flashcards work because they make you recall an answer instead of rereading it. Done with spaced repetition, a few minutes a day can keep a whole year of topics fresh.

Why flashcards work

Rereading notes feels productive, but it mostly builds familiarity. Trying to remember an answer before you see it, called active recall, is what makes memories stronger. Flashcards force active recall every time.

How to make good cards

For formulas, put the name on the front and the formula on the back (front: “Area of a circle”, back: “A = πr²”). For dates and definitions, ask in both directions.

Spaced repetition: review just before you forget

Spaced repetition means reviewing a card again after a gap, and making the gap longer each time you remember it: perhaps 1 day, then 3 days, then a week, then a month. Cards you get wrong come back sooner. You spend your time on what you are about to forget, not on what you already know.

A daily routine that works

  1. Do your due reviews first (usually 5 to 15 minutes).
  2. Add a small number of new cards, about 5 to 10 a day.
  3. After each study session, turn the key facts into cards while they are fresh.

Common mistakes

Questions

How many flashcards should I review a day?

Do every card that is due, then add 5 to 10 new ones. That usually takes 10 to 20 minutes and keeps the daily load steady instead of piling up.

Are flashcards good for maths and science?

Yes, for formulas, definitions, units and key steps. Pair them with practice problems: flashcards help you remember the tools, problems teach you to use them.

What is spaced repetition?

It is a way of reviewing where each item comes back after a growing gap, timed for just before you would forget it. Items you get wrong come back sooner.
