Privacy notice
- Study Hamlet works without an account. Then everything you write stays on your own device.
- Children under 13 can use Study Hamlet without an account, or a parent or guardian can create a username profile for them. Children never need an email address, and Study Hamlet never asks a child for their name or birthday.
- If you make an account, your journal is copied to our cloud database so you can use it on other devices. Only you can read it.
- The AI helper is optional and off by default. If you switch it on, the question you type (and a note, if you pick one) is sent to an AI service to write an answer, and Study Hamlet does not keep it. A parent decides for a child profile.
- No advertising and no tracking. We never sell or rent your information. We count website visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and cannot tell who you are.
- If something in the app breaks, it can send us an anonymous error report (what went wrong, never your notes or who you are) so we can fix it. You can switch this off in Settings.
Reading this with a child? There is a short privacy page written for kids.
1. Who we are
Study Hamlet is published by Sandhya G B (India). Questions or requests: sandyramachandran@gmail.com.
2. What stays on your device
Your nickname, tasks, notes (including any attachments you add), reading progress, focus history, game progress, settings and a recovery copy are saved in your browser or app storage on your device. Study Hamlet uses this storage because the app cannot work without it. It does not use advertising or tracking cookies. If you never create an account, none of this is sent to us.
Website visit counts
On the website (not in the Android app), we count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics so we can see how many people use Study Hamlet, which pages they open and which kinds of devices and countries they visit from. It uses no cookies and no local storage, does not follow you across other websites, and gives us only totals, never who you are. Cloudflare processes the page address, your browser type and your approximate country (from your connection) under its own privacy policy.
Anonymous error reports
If something in Study Hamlet breaks, the app can send us a short technical report so we can fix it: the error message (with any quoted text, email addresses and long numbers removed), which part of the app and which line of code, the page name and the app version. It does not include your notes, nickname, account, email, IP address or any identifier for you or your device, and we cannot link it to you. Reports are deleted after 30 days. To switch them off, untick “Send anonymous error reports” in Settings → Cloud & recovery (remembered on that device).
3. If you create an account
We collect and store:
- Your email address, to sign you in and send confirmation or password-reset emails. Or, if you choose a username instead, the username (we then hold no email for you and cannot reset a forgotten password).
- Your password, which is protected with a one-way hash. We cannot read it.
- If you choose “Continue with Google”: Google tells our sign-in provider your email address, name and profile-picture address. They are kept with your account record, but Study Hamlet does not show or use your name or picture. We never see your Google password. Google handles your sign-in under its own privacy policy, and Google sign-in is only for people 13 or older and parents or guardians.
- Your age band (13 to 17, or 18 and over) and who the account is for (yourself, or as a parent or guardian), together with the time and the version of these documents you accepted. We ask for a birthday once to set up the right kind of account, but we do not keep your birthday.
- For a child profile created by a parent: the child’s username, a link to the parent’s account, and the parent’s confirmation (and its time) that they are the child’s parent or guardian and agree to the profile.
- Your cloud journal: the copy of your notes, tasks, progress and game saves that you choose to save, plus your five previous versions.
- Your AI helper setting (on or off, who changed it and when) and a daily usage counter, if you use the AI helper. The questions and answers themselves are not stored by us.
- Technical connection data such as IP address and browser type, which our service providers keep in short-lived security logs.
We do not ask for your real name, date of birth, address, phone number, location, contacts, photos (other than attachments you add to a note), camera data, or advertising identifiers. Study Hamlet uses the microphone only if you tap Record in the optional Audio to notes feature (see section 6).
Please do not put sensitive personal details (such as home address, school identifiers or health information) in your notes.

4. Why we use it
To run your account and sync your journal between your devices; to keep the service secure and prevent abuse; and to meet legal obligations. We do not use your notes for advertising, profiling, research or to train AI models. If you use the AI helper, your question is used only to write your answer.
5. Children and families
Study Hamlet is designed for learners of all ages:
- Under 13: a child cannot create an account by themselves. They can use Study Hamlet on their device with no account, in which case nothing they write is sent to us. Or a parent or guardian can create a child profile for them (Settings → Child profiles). A child profile has a username and password only: no email, name or birthday.
- 13 and older: you can create your own account, with an email address or just a username.
- Parents and guardians (18 or older): you can create an account for yourself and add child profiles under it. You are the account holder: by creating a profile you confirm you are the child’s parent or legal guardian and agree to us storing their notes and progress under it. You can reset the child’s password, delete the profile, or delete your own account (which also deletes every child profile you created) at any time.
Children’s notes and tasks are free text, so please help children avoid writing personal details in them and choose usernames that are not their real name. Study Hamlet has no public posting, chat, ads or purchases, and children’s profiles are never visible to anyone else.
Audio, pictures and children: Audio to notes and picture questions are not available on child profiles.
AI helper and children: a child profile can use the AI helper only if the parent or guardian switches it on (Settings → AI helper). The child cannot switch it on, and the parent can switch it off at any time. Children’s questions are limited each day, are answered by an AI model told to write for young learners, and are not stored by Study Hamlet.
If you believe a child under 13 has an account that a parent did not create, email sandyramachandran@gmail.com and we will delete it promptly. See the family guide.
6. Who handles your data for us
We use these service providers to run Study Hamlet. They process data only on our behalf and under their own security and privacy commitments:
- Google: only if you choose “Continue with Google”, to confirm who you are.
- Supabase: account sign-in and the cloud database. Data is stored in the region Oceania (Sydney, Australia; ap-southeast-2).
- Groq and Google (Gemini): AI services that write the answers for the optional AI helper and turn audio into text for Audio to notes. Only used if you switch the AI helper on, and for audio only when you tap Record or choose a file.
- Other services we use: Cloudflare (website hosting and cookie-free website visit counts).
The fonts and images in Study Hamlet are served from Study Hamlet itself; the app does not load content from Google or other third parties. We may disclose information if the law requires it. We do not sell, rent or share your information for advertising.
The AI helper
The AI helper is optional and off until you (or, for a child profile, a parent) switch it on. When you ask a question, Study Hamlet’s server sends the question, the text of a note only if you choose to include one, and your last exchange if you ask a follow-up, to an AI provider and returns the answer. We do not send your name, email, username or the rest of your journal, and we do not store the question or the answer. The provider receives the text and the technical connection of our server, not your device. Providers may keep requests for a limited time for safety and abuse checks under their own terms; we use settings that keep children’s questions with Groq, and we ask you not to type personal details. AI answers can be wrong, so check anything important.
Pictures in AI questions
Adults can attach a picture (for example a diagram or a photo of a question) to an AI question. The picture is shrunk on your device, sent through our server to Google’s Gemini service so it can be read, and is not stored by Study Hamlet. It is not available on child profiles. Depending on the plan we use with Google, Google may keep requests for a limited time and, on some plans, use them to improve its products, so please do not attach pictures of people, faces, names, school or home details, or personal documents.
Audio to notes
Audio to notes is optional, for adults only (it is not available on child profiles), and needs the AI helper to be switched on. When you tap Record, your phone or browser asks permission to use the microphone; Study Hamlet never records in the background. Your recording, or the file you choose, is kept only in memory on your device while the page is open. When you tap Turn into text it is sent through our server to a speech-to-text service (Groq, or Google as a backup), which returns the text. We do not store the audio or the text: only text you choose to save as a note is saved, in your journal. Please record only people who know and agree, and do not record private conversations. If you add a Summary, action items, flashcards or practice questions, the text is sent to the AI service in the same way.
7. How long we keep it
- On your device: until you delete it (Settings → Delete local journal) or clear the app’s data.
- Cloud journal: until you delete it or your account. Only the five most recent earlier versions are kept.
- Child profiles: until the parent deletes the profile or the parent’s own account.
- Deleted accounts: your account, email and cloud journal are removed from our database straight away. Our database provider may keep short-lived technical backups, and deleted data drops out of them automatically.
- Provider security logs: kept for a short period set by each provider.
- Anonymous error reports: deleted after 30 days.
8. Your choices and rights
- Download your data: Settings → Export journal.
- Delete your cloud backup: Settings → Cloud & recovery → Delete cloud backup.
- Delete your account: Settings → Cloud & recovery → Delete my account, or see how to delete your account.
- Parents: manage your children’s profiles (reset password, delete) in Settings → Child profiles.
- Correct your information: edit your notes and settings in the app.
- Ask us anything: email sandyramachandran@gmail.com to ask what we hold about you, or to ask for a copy, correction or deletion. Depending on where you live you may have further legal rights, including to complain to your local data-protection authority.
Deleting a cloud backup keeps your account; deleting your account removes both. Study Hamlet cannot erase files you exported or copied elsewhere.
9. Security
Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and protected at rest by our providers. Each account can only reach its own journal. Passwords are hashed. No online service can be perfectly secure, so keep your password private and export a backup of anything important.
10. Notifications
Device notifications are optional, show generic study messages (never your note contents), and use no remote push service. Daily reminders only run while Study Hamlet is open.
11. Changes
If we change this notice in a way that matters, we will update the date above and tell signed-in users in the app. Earlier versions are available on request.
